First 5G+ and Artificial Intelligence solution in Europe for mobility in stations

Adif promotes the digital transformation of its stations and efficient mobility with the first proof of concept in Europe for intelligent station wayfinding. Based on the 5G+ network and Artificial Intelligence, the solution improves passenger experience, enabling smart mobility at stations.

First 5G+ and Artificial Intelligence solution in Europe for mobility in stations

(21/02/2024)

The solution developed together with NTT Data on Orange’s 5G+ network provides information on train departure and arrival times, occupancy levels of station services, waiting times for services such as control luggage, opening and closing times of establishments, incidents, etc.

Likewise, it offers the possibility of providing new functionalities for all types of users, including Adif staff, related to the management of businesses, the best location of information panels, the optimization of maintenance activities and the control of people in unauthorized areas, among others.

The application allows you to plan routes, measure real-time occupancy of the station and its spaces and generate estimates of the time to go to the platform, with enough advance notice to enjoy the station’s leisure and entertainment offering. Thus, having information on the flow of station spaces, it is possible to avoid those with high occupancy and recalculate the route time.

Technologies

To develop the project, NTT Data has used various technologies, managed by a cloud computing platform. Thus, twelve high-resolution cameras have been installed (located in the main concourse, the platforms, the underpass and the upper walkway), capable of counting the number of people in each focused area in real time. In addition, the information they provide is analyzed by Artificial Intelligence techniques.

For precise indoor positioning, digital twins have been developed, complemented by an advanced processing engine, fed by data obtained from a network of devices made up of more than one hundred radio frequency beacons, based on Bluetooth technology that, aided by the inertial sensors of mobile phones and geomagnetism achieve high quality and precision localization.

For its part, Orange has provided a private communications network over its 5G+ network, allowing images to be transmitted in real time to the Edge server of the data receiving centre, located in an Orange network core, thus ensuring the correct flow of this data.

This proof of concept is part of the strategy to transform Adif’s railway stations into multimodal mobility nodes, sustainable and intelligent.
