Iryo shows support for creation of Lisbon-Madrid high-speed connection

(05/05/2022)

Sudoeste Ibérico en Red requests the beginning of operations of the line in 2028 with all infrastructure completed and of similar characteristics to those of the rest of the Iberian Network. Immediately this year, from the entry into operation of the new infrastructures between Plasencia and Badajoz, it requests the beginning of operations of the Lisbon-Extremadura-Madrid line, for which it will be necessary to reach agreement between Spain and Portugal for the homologation of materials and infrastructure.

The business platform considers this line necessary to complete the largest global commercial connection project 'One Belt, One Road', with the aim of forming a set of rail and maritime links between China and Europe. Although Spain already has a rail connection with the Asian country through the international freight line Madrid-Yiwu, the longest transport infrastructure in the world with 13,052 kilometres, there are 600 kilometres missing to close this connection with the ports of Sines, Setúbal and Lisbon.
