The document, presented in the past assembly of the Platform, covers the advances in materials which, from R&D&I, contribute to making the rail system a safer, more efficient and sustainable mode of transport, and to increasing passenger comfort.

The positioning document is technically coordinated by Tecnalia Research & Innovation and involves the participation of 20 key entities in the sector (among which are operators, administrators, industry and researchers) coordinated by the Spanish Railway Technology Platform.

The document includes content relative to rolling stock, such as alloys, composite materials, lightweighting, surface technologies and multifunctionality, advanced manufacturing, maintenance, energy, sustainability, recyclability, lifecycle, acoustics and vibrations; to platform and track, such as maintenance, alloys, multifunctionality, sustainability; to facilities; and challenges and recommendations.
