The contract obtained by CAF is the largest developed in the world with this type of technology, and it also includes the maintenance of the trains for a period of 30 years. The electric traction units will be battery-powered trains able to run on non-electrified lines in addition to conventional operation on tracks with catenary.
North Rhine-Westphalia, whose capital is Düsseldorf, is the most populated Federal State of Germany and has a population of close to 18 million inhabitants. The two transport authorities that have awarded this contract are responsible for both rail and bus transport.
