The European Commission approves full implementation of Madrid–Lisbon high-speed line in 2034



The approved `Implementing Decision´ sets the target that, by 2030, passengers will be able to travel between the two capitals in about five hours, and by 2034, in just three hours. It also sets other intermediate deadlines.

The move to promote the full integration of Portugal and Spain into the European high-speed rail network has been unanimously supported by Member States. In this regard, it is considered that this cross-border infrastructure project will significantly enhance connectivity within the European Union. This project integrates structuring work, interoperability with European networks and deployment of the ERTMS system.
