The airport is linked to the high-speed network through the branch line built and equipped by the Spanish Consortium, which connects the new Terminal 1, in service since August 2019, to the rest of the route. Thus, with the start of operation of the branch line, the high-speed service between the stations of Medina and King Abdulaziz International Airport is resumed.

Likewise, in order to resume commercial service on the entire line, the Spanish Consortium has participated in the construction of a 1.5 km bypass around the Jeddah station that will allow trains to run again between the two terminal stations, Medina and Mecca.

Haramain services, which opened in October 2018, were interrupted on 29 September 2019 following a fire at Jeddah station, one of the five stations of the line and whose works were entrusted to another international consortium.

Services

During the last year of operation, Haramain High Speed Railway has gradually increased the number of seats and services available, and it is currently running five trains a day in each direction on Wednesdays to Sundays from KAIA and Medina stations, with all trains calling at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC).

The ERTMS Level 2 signalling and safety system will be incorporated into the operation in the next few days, allowing trains to reach the maximum commercial speed of 300 km/h.

The Spanish Consortium is currently working with Saudi Railway Company (SAR) and Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) in order to restore commercial activity on the entire line, halted by the fire.
