Metro de Madrid reduced its environmental impact by half in 2014

The use of electricity from renewable energies and cleaner sources during 2014 resulted in an over 50% reduction in Metro de Madrid’s environmental impact.

Metro de Madrid reduced its environmental impact by half in 2014

(29/06/2015)  Metro de Madrid’s emissions amounted to a total of 74,641 tons of CO2 equivalent during last year, compared with 150,296 in 2013. This variation is due mainly to the drop in the high voltage electric energy emission factor as a result of the use of renewable energies and cleaner sources.

Emissions by the underground during 2014 are set at 18.95 g of CO2 equivalent per journey and kilometre. Over 70 per cent of the emissions generated by Metro de Madrid stem from the electricity used to move the trains.

The carbon footprint is closely associated with environmental management, energy efficiency and, as a whole, with sustainability of Madrid´s metro system´s activity.
