Talgo’s Avril train reaches 363 km/h in test run

In the wee hours of Monday 2nd March Talgo’s Avril prototype high speed train reached a speed of 363 km/h on the section between Guadalajara and Calatayud, on the Madrid-Barcelona-French Border high speed line. This high speed train, developed by Talgo with its own traction system, is designed for a passenger capacity of over 500.

(26/03/2015)  The mark was obtained during the train’s trial and certification process, which is currently in its final phase. In the first test runs on the Madrid-Seville rail line the train reached a speed of 300 km/h. Now on the Madrid-Barcelona line, which is prepared for speeds above 300 km/h, the train reached 363 km/h, speed that allows its certification to run at 330 km/h.

Talgo’s AVRIL (Alta Velocidad Rueda Independiente Ligero - Light Independent Wheel High Speed) prototype train, which was introduced as a project in 2008 and presented officially at Innotrans 2012, finished its static tests in early 2014.

The Avril is a very high speed and high capacity train conceived as a flexible platform adaptable to versions with fixed gauge (1,435 mm, 1,520 mm or 1,668 mm) and with variable gauge system. In addition to having a traction system designed for four tensions, this vehicle offers the possibility of dual train diesel/electric and standard (2,900 mm) and wide clearance (3,200 mm). The Avril design also makes it possible to change the number of coaches while maintaining all the features.

The Avril configuration can be adapted to the needs of each client and offers different operation speeds, with the maximum speed being 380 km/h. The seat configuration is also adaptable –a standard 200 m train set can carry more than 500 passengers. Furthermore, Avril has special technical characteristics such as a natural tilting system, diesel-electric traction and low floor coaches.

The train incorporates Talgo’s concepts of accessibility, energy efficiency, aerodynamics, materials and low energy consumption per passenger-km. It also provides a seat configuration inspired by commercial aviation: 3+2 seats per row, ensuring maximum seating capacity and flexibility to rail operators. This 3+2 distribution allows a higher capacity reaching 600 seats in its standard configuration.
