European project SAFER-LC conference

The Spanish Railways Foundation (Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) held the mid-term conference of the European Research Project SAFER-LC, during which more than 80 experts from 18 countries discussed and brought their experiences together regarding human factor and new application technologies at level crossings.

A part of the conference was dedicated to introduce the developments achieved within the project, in particular those related to human factor, technical solutions applicable to level crossings and low-cost measures to improve safety.

The second block of sessions included dissemination and technological experiences from several European countries (among which was Spain), as well as other related research projects. As far as the Spanish contribution is concerned, Adif showed the applicable technological developments, while Inspide presented a technological tool applicable to level crossings which the company is developing together with the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic.

In addition, the nine pilot tests that are to be carried out within the project were presented, covering not only simulation and controlled environment testing but also real-world field tests. Gathering all this knowledge will make it possible to draw some conclusions of the SAFER-LC project, which will result in a “tool box” applicable to decision-making and open to all the agents involved in this field.

Project

SAFER-LC, a project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 programme, is led by the International Union of Railways (UIC) and is composed of 17 partners from 10 countries: France, Finland, Norway, Greece, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey and Spain.

The project, which started in May 2017 and will last 36 months, aims to improve safety and minimise risk by developing a fully-integrated multimodal set of innovative solutions and tools for the proactive management and design of level-crossing infrastructure. It involves the participation of rail and road associations, infrastructure managers and railway operators, rail research institutes and universities, and providers (Commsignia, Geoloc Systems, and Intader).
