The contract that NS is negotiating with CAF includes 120 passenger trains for local services, called Sprinter New Generation (SNG) trains, for a total of approximately 510 million euros, plus the possibility to order more similar trains.

The units, whose entry into service is planned for 2018, are to have wide glazed areas and systems to reduce energy consumption. They will be equipped with the ERTMS train protection system and will be accessible for people with reduced mobility, including a wheelchair-accessible toilet.

The SNG trains come under the Dutch Railways’ High-Frequency Rail Transport Programme (Programma Hoogfrequent Spoor, PHS), which aims to modernise the country’s rail services.
