Worth more than 94 million euros, the modernization work will include the installation of 562,000 metres of rails, 136,000 wooden sleepers, more than 100,000 cubic metres of ballast, as well as work related to alignment and mechanized track levelling and reinforcement of bridges.

The line to be repaired currently operates freight traffic only and connects with the Paraguayan network through the crossing built over the dyke of Salto Grande Dam. The Uruguayan network, operated by the State Railways Administration of Uruguay (Administración de Ferrocarriles de Estado, AFE) has about 2,900 km of lines, all of which (except 11 km) are standard UIC gauge not electrified single track.
