While Spain ranks 14 in the overall country classification of European countries with the best transport –the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom and Denmark lead the ranking–, our country is at the top of the list as far as quality of railroad infrastructure is concerned, followed by Finland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
In the EU Transport Scoreboard, Spain (together with United Kingdom and France) is far advanced as regards the completion of the TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network), with a 95 percent implementation in the railway field.
The report by the European Commission also highlights that competition in the freight rail market is growing considerably. In particular, it sets private operators’ market share in 19.05%.
In other indicators, such as safety or consumer satisfaction, Spanish railway’s score corresponds to the EU average, although it is above the average as regards the electrification of railway lines.
