VAG, the operator responsible for public transport in the German city of Friburgh, recently awarded CAF the contract for the supply of 12 Urbos 3 type trams for an amount of 40 million euros. This contract is part of a railway expansion programme which includes new lines as well as the modernisation of the fleet of units.
The 100% low floor 7-car vehicles are 43 metres long, with a capacity for 86 seated passengers and 164 standing passengers. The first units are envisaged to be delivered in the second quarter of 2015.
Taiwan
Additionally, the consortium made up of CAF together with the construction company Evergreen has been awarded the turnkey project for the light train system of Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan.
The contract involves the construction and equipment of a new line for light rail vehicles running a length of 30 km in two stages, the first of which is 8.6 km long.
CAF will supply Urbos series units with the ACR system for catenary-free running, the first one of this type in Asia. The total contract relating to CAF amounts to almost 100 million euros and consists of the supply of the trams, signalling, electrification and the ticketing system.
Estonia
Tallinna Linnatranspordi Aktsiaselts, the tram operator for the city of Tallin in Estonia, awarded CAF the contract for the supply of 16 Urbos vehicles for an amount of 44 million euros.
The 80% low floor units consist of three articulated modules supported on four motor bogies. This is a single direction vehicle prepared to run on a 1067 mm track gauge and at a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
The trams have a capacity for up to 284 passengers, with 86 of these seated. The units are prepared to operate in the difficult weather conditions prevailing in Estonia (from -40ºC to 40ºC) and are also fitted with the ACR system.
