The first contract was awarded by Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos to the Frota BH consortium formed by CAF and Alstom and involves the supply of 10 four-car trains for the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, capital of the Minas Gerais state.
These EMUs will run on 1600 mm track gauge with 3000 V power supply. The vehicle is bidirectional with a capacity of 1,300 passengers and provides easy access for Persons with Reduced Mobility. It is able to run at service speeds of 90 km/h.
The Belo Horizonte city has a population of 2.3 million inhabitants and is one of the 12 host cities designated for the FIFA World Cup 2014, as well as a sub-host city for the Summer Olympic Games 2016.
With the second contract CAF will supply all the bogies for the 15 new trains, four-car each, which are part of the procurement contract undertaken by the City of Porto Alegre, capital of the Rio Grande do Sul state, for Empresa de Trens Urbanos de Porto Alegre.
Both projects will be implemented at CAF’s plant in Brazil, located in the Sao Paulo state and which has become one of the most modern railway stock plants in Latin America.
